When You Hear The Emergency Sirens

  1. Turn on your radio and tune in to radio station CFOB 93.1 FM The Border.

    93.1 FM operates from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. If it is between the hours of 6:00 PM and 6:00 AM and there is no message being broadcast on 93.1 FM, stay tuned as it will take a few minutes for them to start the emergency message.

  2. Listen for Instructions.
    • For a Test, you will hear the following on 93.1 FM:

      There is presently an emergency training exercise being conducted in the 93.1 FM broadcast area. This is an exercise only and not an emergency situation. Should an emergency arise, we would ask you to listen to this station for further information. We repeat this is an emergency training exercise being conducted in the 93.1 FM broadcast area. This is not an emergency situation.

      Tests are usually conducted the first Wednesday of every month at 2:00 PM

    • For an Actual Emergency, you will hear the following on 93.1 FM:

      There is presently a state of emergency occurring in the 93.1 FM broadcast area. Please keep listening to this station for further information. Do not call this radio station or any of the area's emergency services unless there is a direct threat to you or anybody else's immediate safety. We are aware of the present emergency situation and it is necessary to keep the phone lines open.

      Actual Emergencies are events such as chemical accidents or tornadoes

  3. If an evacuation order is given:
    • Memorize what zone you reside in. This will tell you if you are affected by the evacuation order.
    • Dress for the season.
    • Bring any critical medication with you.
    • Turn off appliances such as stoves, T.V etc.
    • Lock house.
    • Proceed to the emergency receiving centre as directed.
    • Utilize your 72-hour emergency kit.

Procedures

Chemical Accident Procedure

  • If evacuation of your zone or area is advised proceed immediately in the direction indicated. Zones are found on the map. Directions will be determined by weather conditions, location and nature of the spill or leak.
  • If trapped in the building the nature of the chemical involved will determine where to locate. If the chemical is lighter than air, locate at the lowest point possible in the building. If the chemical is heavier than air, locate at the highest point possible in the building. Close all doors and windows and seal with available material. Use wet rags, tape, or whatever is available. Remain in the room until search parties reach your location.

Tornado Procedure

  • Remain in the building.
  • Go to the lowest possible level near the centre of the building.
  • Stay away from natural openings such as windows and doors.
  • Sit on the floor protecting head and face with your arms.
  • If unable to reach the centre of the building use desks and tables to protect yourself form flying glass and debris.

General Procedure for Businesses

  1. Be sure all customers have vacated building.
  2. Dismiss all staff.
  3. Leave building and make sure the building is locked.
