Indigenous Admin Intern (12-month term)
The Town of Fort Frances is seeking a motivated Indigenous intern to join our Administration & Finance Division through the NOHFC Indigenous Workforce Development Stream.
This internship offers hands‑on experience in administration, human resources, community engagement, and policy review. The successful candidate will support FNMI (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit) initiatives, assist with municipal projects, and help strengthen relationships with neighbouring First Nations communities.

Works under direction and supervision of the Human Resources Manager
None
HR & Administrative Support:
- Assist with HR documentation and maintain employee records.
- Support recruitment activities from job posting through candidate selection.
- Help prepare onboarding materials and participate in orientation sessions.
- Provide general administrative support as required.
Records & Compliance:
- Organize and maintain accurate administrative files
- Ensure compliance with data protection requirements and assist with audits or internal reviews.
- Maintain records related to Indigenous engagement and initiatives.
FNMI Engagement & Community Collaboration:
- Support FNMI engagement initiatives by helping coordinate meetings for the FNMI Advisory Committee
- Prepare materials that reflect Indigenous perspectives,
- Participate in community events when appropriate.
- Contribute to initiatives that strengthen relationships with neighbouring First Nations communities.
Meetings, Elections & Communications:
- Coordinate meetings by scheduling, preparing agendas, and taking minutes.
- Support election planning and logistics, ensuring clear communication with stakeholders. Draft and review communications, including Council materials, to ensure clarity, accuracy, and cultural inclusiveness.
Training & Resource Development:
- Assist in organizing training sessions by arranging venues, materials, and follow‑ups. Help develop resources or training materials that support cultural awareness, reconciliation, and inclusive municipal practices.
Policy Review & Reporting:
- Contribute to policy and program reviews by gathering data, analyzing existing practices, recommending improvements.
- Recommend and provide input on culturally respectful language.
- Assist with report preparation by compiling data and drafting well‑organized content.
Learning & Development:
- Participate in mentorship, workshops, and training sessions related to HR, administration, Indigenous governance, history, and reconciliation.
- Share perspectives when comfortable and help foster a respectful, inclusive workplace culture.

Administrative tasks require sustained concentration and attention to detail, while effectively managing frequent interruptions and shifting priorities.

Reviewing policies, procedures, and legislation requires strong analytical skills and the ability to accurately interpret and apply information to various administrative and HR‑related tasks.

Regular interaction with employees at all organizational levels, external agencies, community partners, and benefit providers requires professionalism, clear communication, and cultural awareness.
- Secondary School Diploma
- Minimum six (6) months of relevant experience in an office environment.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills.
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills and adaptability.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Proficiency with MS Office and general office software
- Self-identify as Indigenous (First Nation, Métis, or Inuit)
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Reside in Northern Ontario
- Be new to the workforce, transitioning careers, unemployed, or underemployed
- Not have previously participated in a NOHFC-funded internship
- A satisfactory Criminal Record Check will be required as a condition of hire.
- The incumbent is required to work a 35-hour workweek during regular business hours.
- Occasional work out of town is required while attending courses, meetings, or seminars.
- The incumbent spends the workday indoors in private office surroundings.
