Fort Frances and Regional Leaders meet regarding Wanagekong-Biiwega'iganan Clean Energy Project

This past Tuesday, January 7th, 2025, Mayor Andrew Hallikas, CAO Marcel Michaels, and Operations and Facilities Manager Travis Rob met with Highbury Energy, Chiefs and representatives from the ten First Nation communities of the Southern Treaty Three, Rainy River Future Development Corporation, MP Marcus Powlowski, and others at Seven Generations Education Institute – Rainy Lake Campus. A tour of available industrial land in the Town of Fort Frances also took place.

Highbury Energy has partnered with the ten area First Nations to create Wanagekong-Biiwega’iganan Clean Energy Corporation (WBCEC), which is a clean energy company looking to transform wood waste into low-carbon fuels. Town officials are honoured and excited that Fort Frances is under consideration as the location for the proposed biorefinery.

Tuesday, MP Powlowski also announced a commitment of $2.5 million dollars from the Federal government towards this project.

We look forward to continuing collaborating with WBCEC, a project that holds great potential to enhance economic prosperity for both our community and the surrounding region.
