The mayor of Fort Frances was one of 169 municipal leaders to receive strong mayor powers from the Ontario government on May 1, 2025.

In Ontario, strong mayor powers grant the head of council (typically the mayor) enhanced authority over municipal administration and decision-making, particularly in areas related to provincial priorities. These powers include appointing and dismissing key officials, proposing and managing budgets, and vetoing certain by-laws.

These changes are being put in place help deliver on provincial priorities and are detailed under Part VI.1 of the Municipal Act, 2001.
