Indigenous Relations Advisory Committee Updates

Monday, February 10th, 2025, Council formally approved the new Terms of Reference for the Indigenous Relations Advisory Committee. This includes recruiting for new members. If you are a member of the public, or an Indigenous youth up to 26 years of age, please fill out this application form and apply by sending it to clerks@fortfrances.ca. These positions will remain open until filled. Appointees term will end November 2026. Please note that applications must formally be approved by the Town of Fort Frances Council.

Updates

Membership

The Committee membership will increase with the addition of the following seats:

  • Two Indigenous Youth members up to 26 years of age (from 1 youth of Fort Frances High School)
  • One member of the public
  • One Elder of the Southern Treaty Three to be appointed without an application process

New Mission Statement

"The Indigenous Relations Advisory Committee is established to strengthen the relationship between the Town of Fort Frances and Indigenous communities. The Committee serves to guide the Town on matters affecting Indigenous residents and to foster a spirit of reconciliation, respect, and inclusivity within the community."

Updating Language

The inclusive term "Indigenous" which represents First Nation, Métis, and Inuit people has replaced the word "Aboriginal" wherever used.

Reporting

  • The Committee may report to Council more than annually as progress is made.
  • The Town of Fort Frances CAO will no longer be assigned to reporting on the Committee's behalf.

Staff Support

  • The Deputy Clerk may provide other administrative work as necessary.
  • The Committee may call upon the Town of Fort Frances Recreation and Culture Manager and consultants as necessary.

Appointment to the Committee

  • The Office of the Clerk will receive your application.
  • Your applications to Boards and Committees of Council will be brought to an In-Camera session of Council, allowable per the Municipal Act, 2001 section 239 (b) personal matters about an identifiable individual, including municipal or local board employees.
  • Your address and contact information will be redacted in the meeting of Mayor and Council.
  • Formal appointment by resolution will take place in the regular session, following conclusion of the In-Camera.
  • The Office of the Clerk will contact you notifying you of Council's decision.
  • The Office of the Clerk will notify the Committee of your appointment, and provide your name, email, and phone number.
  • The Committee will notify you of upcoming meetings and any onboarding required.
